What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization is the work of making your business easy for AI systems to understand and describe accurately — the answer-era counterpart to search optimization.
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a business easy for generative AI systems — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, and AI search features — to find, understand, and describe accurately in the answers they generate. Where search optimization aims to win a place in a list of links, GEO aims to make your business the one an assistant can name and characterise without getting it wrong.
The term is newer than the practice. Much of GEO is disciplined fundamentals applied to a new goal: being understood as an entity rather than ranked as a page.
Why a new term exists
Generative systems do not just list sources; they synthesise an answer and commit to it. That commitment changes what helps. A page that ranks by circling a keyword is little use to a system that needs a clear, quotable fact. GEO names the work of supplying those facts in a form a generative system can retrieve, trust, and repeat.
What GEO actually involves
- A clear, consistent business identity so systems can tell your records apart from everyone else's.
- Concrete, customer-language descriptions of services, areas, and audience that can be matched to real questions.
- Information that agrees with itself across sources you do not own.
- Claims corroborated in public sources, so a system can repeat them safely.
- Answer-shaped content — the answer stated plainly and near the top, in retrievable text.
- Structured data that reflects what is visible on the page, added to correct information.
How GEO differs from keyword optimization
Keyword optimization targets the phrases in a query. GEO targets meaning and trust: a system matches questions semantically and then favours the business it can describe without hedging. Stuffing keywords does little; being clear, consistent, and corroborated does a lot. Off-site consistency, largely outside classic SEO's scope, becomes central.
What GEO cannot promise
GEO is not a guaranteed path to being cited or recommended. Generative systems are operated by other companies, draw on different and shifting sources, and behave differently from one another — a business well represented to Perplexity may be poorly represented to ChatGPT. GEO improves the inputs you control; it does not control the systems.
Where GEO fits alongside SEO
GEO does not replace SEO; it extends it toward a different outcome. The crawlable, fast, well-structured site that SEO wants is also the site GEO needs. On top of that base, GEO adds entity clarity, off-site consistency, corroboration, and answer-shaped content — and monitoring that looks at what assistants say rather than where you rank.
For the direct comparison, see GEO vs SEO, and for applying it commercially, see AI search optimization for business. Our services are built around producing exactly this kind of understandable, corroborated content.
Frequently asked questions
- Is GEO just a rebranding of SEO?
- No, though they overlap. SEO aims to rank a page in a list of links. GEO aims to make a business understandable and safely quotable inside a generated answer, which depends heavily on off-site consistency and retrievable, corroborated facts that a ranking audit does not measure.
- Does GEO guarantee my business will be cited by AI?
- No. Generative systems are run by different companies, use different sources, and change constantly. GEO improves how accurately and consistently your business can be understood — the part you can influence — but no one can guarantee a citation or recommendation.
