GEO vs SEO: what's the difference?

SEO wins a place in a list of links; GEO makes a business describable inside a generated answer. They share a foundation and diverge at the goal — and they are complementary.

SEO and GEO are complementary, not rivals. Search engine optimization works to have a page appear in a list of links. Generative engine optimization works to have a business understood and described accurately inside a generated answer. They share a technical foundation and diverge at the goal, so neither replaces the other.

The short version: SEO optimises pages for ranking; GEO optimises a business for being described. Below is where that difference actually shows up.

Different goals

SEO's goal is a position — appear high enough in the results that someone clicks. A search engine can show an uncertain or partial page because a human does the final judging. GEO's goal is an accurate mention — the assistant commits to naming your business and stating facts about it, so it favours the business it can describe without being wrong.

Different units of work

SEO's unit is the page: its content, speed, structure, and links. GEO's unit is the business as an entity: whether your identity, services, location, and claims cohere and agree across every source. A site can have excellent individual pages and still be an incoherent entity, which ranks fine but recommends poorly.

Different reliance on sources you do not own

SEO is mostly about your own property and the links pointing to it. GEO depends heavily on off-site consistency — directories, listings, review platforms, and registers agreeing with each other and with your site. Contradictions there barely affect rankings but directly cause an assistant to hedge and omit you.

Different content shape

SEO has long tolerated content that circles a topic to capture a phrase. GEO rewards answer-shaped content: the answer stated plainly and near the top, in retrievable text a system can quote. The practical change is small and consequential — answer first, elaborate after.

Different measurement

SEO measures positions, impressions, and clicks. GEO measures what assistants actually say when asked your customers' questions, recorded across several systems and watched over time. There is no single ranking dashboard for GEO, partly because ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity disagree and change independently.

Why you need both

The foundations overlap: a crawlable, fast, well-structured site with genuinely useful content serves both. Do SEO for the base and to keep winning clicks; add GEO for entity clarity, off-site consistency, corroboration, and answer-shaped content so assistants can describe you. Neither guarantees an outcome — SEO cannot promise a ranking, GEO cannot promise a citation — but together they cover both how people and AI systems find you.
